Anton crowd
Franz Anton Quantity (born February 15, 1808 in Arnsberg , † January 27, 1880 in Danzig ) was a German high school teacher, naturalist and arachnologist and bryologist.
Franz Anton Menge was born on February 15, 1808 in Arnsberg in Westphalia, where he also attended grammar school. From May 1828 to April 1832 he studied natural sciences at the University of Bonn with Karl Dietrich von Münchow , Ludolph Christian Treviranus , August Goldfuß , Johann Jacob Nöggerath and Karl Gustav Bischof and acquired knowledge in physics, mineralogy, botany and zoology as well as chemistry.
After half a probationary year in 1832 at the grammar school in Bonn and a three-year position as a teacher in the high school in Graudenz from Easter 1833, he was appointed to the Petri School in Danzig on June 22, 1836. Here he also became a member of the "Danzig Natural Research Society" and was its secretary for many years. Further memberships are:

- 1855 corresponding member of the " Imperial Royal Geological Institute of Vienna "
- 1857 corresponding member of the " Silesian Society for Patriotic Culture "
- 1860 external member of the "East Prussian Physical-Economic Society of Königsberg"
- 1870 foreign member of the "Natural Scientists Association of Riga".
In addition to zoological treatises, his writings also include botanical ones: "On visible life movements of plants", geological: "Geognostic remarks about the Danzig area" and paleontological investigations about inclusions in amber: "About life signs of prehistoric animals enclosed in amber" (1856), He also provided the Brothers Grimm with material for the first volumes of the German dictionary .
Anton Quantity worked as a teacher in Danzig for almost 42 years and received the title of professor on August 11, 1868. When he left the Petri School in 1877, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle in recognition of his services to school and science .
He bequeathed his extensive collection of amber inclusions to the West Prussian Provincial Museum in Danzig, which was founded in 1880 .
