Anton Reyberger

Anton Carl Reyberger OSB (also Rayberger * January 21, 1757 in Göllersdorf , † 3. October 1818 in Vienna ) was an Austrian theologian and civil councilor . He was u. a. Rector of the University of Vienna and Abbot of Melk Abbey .

Life

Reyberger was born the son of a miller in Göllersdorf in northern Lower Austria and attended a Jesuit grammar school in Vienna. He wanted to join the Jesuit order himself , but after it was repealed and banned in 1773 , he entered the Benedictine monastery of Melk on November 13, 1774 . In 1781 he made his solemn profession and was ordained a priest in the same year . For a few years he then taught classical languages ​​at the Stiftsgymnasium Melk , before he was appointed professor of pastoral theology at the University of Pest by Gottfried van Swieten in 1786 . In 1788 he received the chair for moral theology at the University of Vienna, which he held until 1810.

1800/01 he was dean of the theological faculty , 1808 theological book censor . In 1810 he became a real member of the Lower Austrian government, for the academic year 1810/11 he was elected rector of the university and on November 7, 1810, abbot of Melk. In 1817 he was appointed to the Lower Austrian Estates. Reyberger often stayed in this position in Vienna, where he died on October 3, 1818.
