Anton Sohn (born August 28, 1769 in Kümmerazhofen , today part of Bad Waldsee ; † March 31, 1840 in Zizenhausen , today a district of Stockach ) is known as "Bildermann von Zizenhausen", German church painter and manufacturer of the Zizenhausen terracottas .

Live and act

The son Anton, from the marriage of Franz Joseph's son with Elisabeth, née Graf, was born on August 28, 1769. Originally working in the tradition of his father as a carpenter and designer of small terracotta reliefs, Anton Sohn first became a church painter due to his artistic talent beyond the purely manual skills. The search for artistic role models led him to Italy at the age of 15. Various pencil sketches, red chalk drawings and ink works in the appropriate execution from this period indicated his great ability early on.

In 1799 Anton Sohn settled in Zizenhausen near Stockach and earned his living primarily as a picture and barrel painter . At the same time, he was increasingly using given motifs, starting with the original relief form, through increasingly finely worked out ("engraved") models, brought to artistic perfection, to form semi-sculptural clay figures. The figures that were then sent to a firing process were then painted in bright colors. Labeled strips of paper explaining the object were glued to the round base of the figures. Originally mainly religious motifs were used to create depictions of professional groups, groups in traditional costumes and musicians, individual figures and a number of important personalities. The diverse themes range in their representation from the idyll to time-critical satire and caricature. In written records that have been preserved, 746 models from the hand of the "Bildermann von Zizenhausen" for the production of his terracottas are recorded.

Customers were not only private individuals who set up these figurines in their living areas, for example in showcases, on desks or on chimneys, but also commercial establishments such as confectioners who use them primarily at Christmas time as decoration for their shop windows. Distribution, with its main sales area in southwest Germany and Switzerland, was largely carried out by the art dealer JR Brenner in Basel .

In addition to his artistic activity in Zizenhausen held the office of Mayor Anton Son (1803), the mayor (1809), the tax collector and a Grand Ducal Baden bailiff (1810). In 1830 he was appointed the first and oldest judge in Stockach .

In 1839 Anton Sohn Vater sold all the models to his son Theodor (1811–1876), who continued the workshop and sales department in Zizenhausen with his older brothers Johann Nepomuk (* 1802) and Ferdinand (* 1797) . The grandson Andreas (1847–1920) ran the business until after the First World War. After that there was little production in the family using old molds.
