Anton Ulrich von Erath

Anton Ulrich von Erath (born March 19, 1709 in Braunschweig ; † August 26, 1773 in Dillenburg ) was a German archivist and came from a family in southern Germany. He worked as a diplomat , historian , publicist and lawyer for the House of Orange-Nassau.

Life

After studying at the University of Helmstedt , Anton Ulrich Erath gained his first professional experience as an archivist at the Reichsstift Quedlinburg . In 1742 he moved to Wolfenbütteland took up residence in Braunschweig. From 1747 Erath worked as a councilor and archivist in Dillenburg. Here he was responsible for the archives of the House of Orange-Nassau and was sent several times as a diplomat to other royal courts. For his services he and his family received the renewed elevation to the hereditary nobility in 1750. The coat of arms description reads: “In blue, a half crowned golden lion. On the gold-crowned helmets, with blue-gold covers, a little label labeled like the shield, between an open black flight covered with gold roses. "
