Life

Anton von Rydzewski was born into the family of a Russian lieutenant general engineer. He attended the Hörschelmann private school in Werro and studied political and legal theory, philosophy, psychology and Russian history at the University of Dorpat from 1855 to 1859 . He then became a tax officer in Vladimir and later in Saint Petersburg . Von Rydzewski was married twice. With his second wife, Alexandrine von Nordmann, he moved to Dresden in 1885 , where he lived from then on as a privateer.

Von Rydzewski only started mountaineering at the age of 50. From 1891 to 1900 he undertook a large number of mountain tours, first ascents and first ascents in Bergell with the mountain guide Christian Klucker . Among other things, he carried out the first ascent of Ago di Sciora , Pizzi Gemelli , Sciora di Fuori and Piz Trubinasca . His first ascents include the east and west ridge of Piz Badile and most of the steep ice couloirs of the Sciora group. His role model was the German explorer and alpinist Paul Güssfeldt .

In addition to Klucker, he also employed other mountain guides, including a. Mansueto Barbaria from Cortina d'Ampezzo and Emile Rey from Courmayeur. The relationship between the baron and his leaders was marked by constant friction. There were repeated arguments, especially with Klucker, three times the Führer fired his master, but Rydzewski repeatedly managed to hire him again. The relationship between the two unequal personalities has already been described as "scenes of a marriage", and despite everything they did great alpine pioneering work. Rydzewski offered Klucker the opportunity to advance the alpine development of the Bergellerberge. Only the northern edge of Piz Badile was denied by Klucker to the “flour sack”. The chapter in Klucker's autobiography about his tours with the Baron reads like a lament.

In Bergell, Rydzewski is still called "Russ" today. Only recently has Rydzewski's outstanding photographic work been made accessible through meticulous research by the journalist couple Ursula Bauer and Jürg Frischknecht . He is considered to be the “first photographer in Bergell”.

Rydzewski worked on a monumental work on Bergell, for which he never found a publisher. Klucker examined the 2,000-page handwritten manuscript and provided it with damning comments. It is now in the Museum Alpin in Pontresina.
