Antoni Clavé
Antoni Clavé i Sanmartí (born April 5, 1913 in Barcelona , † August 31, 2005 in Saint-Tropez ) was an important contemporary Spanish painter and sculptor .
Life
The autodidact Antoni Clavé began his artistic career with illustrations and the design of stage sets. During the Franco dictatorship 1939–1975 he emigrated into French exile. It was there that he met Pablo Picasso , who had a major influence on Clavé's artistic development towards the abstract . Many of his works are collages of textiles and paper, but also etchings .
Antoni Clavé participated in documenta II ( 1959 ) and documenta III in 1964 in Kassel .
In 1978 a major retrospective of him was shown at the Center Pompidou in Paris .
Alongside Antoni Tàpies , he was one of the most famous contemporary painters in Spain.
