Antonie Oetgens van Waveren (* 1585 in Amsterdam ; † 1658 ibid), knight , army from Waveren, Botsbol, Ruyge Wilnis and the island of Ameland was an Amsterdam regent and Dutch diplomat of the Golden Age .

biography

Antonie came from the Oetgens family (van Waveren) . His parents were the regent Frans Hendricksz Oetgens van Waveren and Alyd van Hove van Zyl. Through his father he inherited a large property in Amsterdam which he was able to sell for a profit when expanding the city. Oetgens was first entrusted with the mayor's office in 1626; further appointments followed in 1627, 1629, 1631, 1638, 1649 and 1650. In 1631 he was the republic's envoy and ambassador to Denmark and Hamburg. In 1638 the regents Andries Bicker , Albert Burgh , Pieter Hasselaer , Abraham Boom and Oetgens organized the magnificent entry of the former French Queen Maria de 'Medici into Amsterdam.

In 1650, in the conflict between the rulers of Amsterdam and Wilhelm II of Orange , Hasselaer and his comrade Hasselaer were sent by the Bicker brothers to forbid Wilhelm of Orange from entering the city. In 1654 he worked as the Dutch envoy to mediate peace between Sweden and Poland. In 1655 he was one of the five commissioners for the construction of the new town house. In 1659, Oetgens, along with Van Zahm, Lieuwe van Aitzema and Simon van Beaumont, were appointed lords of the island of Ameland by the Roman-German Emperor . His son Johan Oetgens van Waveren , mayor of Amsterdam in 1670, was born from his marriage to Anna Spiegel .
