Antonio Bertoloni (born February 8, 1775 in Sarzana , Republic of Genoa , † April 17, 1869 in Bologna ) was an Italian botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Bertol. "

Live and act

Bertoloni first studied medicine and botany in Pavia , graduating in medicine in 1796 in Genoa . He practiced as a doctor in Sarzana , taught from 1811 as a professor of physics at the imperial Lyceum in Genoa , also gave lectures at the university, and in 1815 he was appointed professor of botany at the University of Bologna . In 1837 his son Giuseppe Bertoloni (1804–1879) was the successor to the Department of Botany. In 1840 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy .

He established his reputation with his Flora italica (1833-1854 in 10 volumes), which he had a Flora italica cryptogama (1858-1867 in 2 volumes) follow.

Dedication names

The genus Bertolonia of the plant family of the black- mouthed plants (Melastomataceae) and the species Ophrys bertolonii (Bertolonis Ragwurz) are named in his honor.
