Antonio Catalano or Catalani "l'antico", called "il Romano" (* 1560 in Messina ; † 1630 ibid) was an Italian painter of the late Renaissance in Bologna , Malta and Sicily .

Life

He was probably a student of Deodato Guinaccia , as he followed his painting style, which he had learned from Polidoro da Caravaggio, in his early work . Through protection, he came to Rome in the workshop of Federico Barocci (1535–1612), whose painting influenced his style from then on. His next stop was Bologna , where he worked for a while under the much younger Francesco Albani (1578-1660). Together with the Albani student Girolamo Bonini , he created frescoes in the Palazzo Pubblico in Bologna and independently several altarpieces for the S. Caterina di Saragoza and the S. Andrea delle Scuole.

Catalano returned to Messina via Malta, where he painted for churches, for example he painted for the Convento del Cappuccini in Gesso the Nativity of Christ .

His son was the painter Antonio Catalano il Giovane (* 1585 in Messina; † 1666 there), from whom the painting Sta. Ursula with the holy virgins is located in the Museo Regionale di Messina .
