Agassiz 'dwarf cichlid ( Apistogramma agassizii ) is a species from the cichlid family . It bears its scientific species name in honor of the naturalist Louis Agassiz .

Agassiz's dwarf cichlid is native to slow-flowing or stagnant waters of the Amazonian lowlands. He stays there over the fall foliage layer. It reaches a body length of about 10 centimeters, whereby the males exceed the females in body length and are also a bit more colorful.

He is one of the so-called hideout breeders and forms harems . A female lays around 150 eggs on the ceiling of a cave and ensures a constant exchange of water by flapping her fins. After hatching, the larvae are placed in a hollow on the ground and remain there until the yolk sac is used up. The swarm of young animals should then be fed with Artemia nauplii.

Keeping and care

Agassiz 'tilapia is now a popular aquarium fish that most other dwarf cichlids and characins is socialized. Agassiz's cichlid is omnivorous . The following food is suitable in the aquarium: live food ( Tubifex , mosquito larvae ), frozen food and dry food (granules, food flakes). Since the fish come from black water rivers, peat filtration is recommended.
