Apollonia Seydelmann

Apollonia Seydelmann (born de Forgue ; born June 17, 1767 or 1768 in Venice or Trieste, † June 27, 1840 in Dresden ) was a German-Italian miniature painter .

Life

She was the daughter of a French landowner and the Roman Teresa Tomasini. After her father's death, her mother married the poet Caterino Mazzolà (1745–1806). The family moved from Venice to Dresden, where their stepfather became court poet. There she married the painter Jakob Crescenz Seydelmann at the age of 16 . Under his guidance, she made rapid progress as a painter. In 1790 the couple traveled to Italy, where Apollonia Seydelmann studied miniature painting with Theresa Maron , the sister of Anton Raphael Mengs . When they returned to Dresden, she had already earned an excellent reputation for her sepia drawings and miniatures and was accepted as a member of the Dresden Academy , for which she received a pension of 200 thalers.

After her drawing of the Sistine Madonna , Johann Friedrich Müller (1782–1816) was to execute his famous copperplate engraving; However, he was not entirely satisfied with Seydelmann's work and therefore traveled first to Dresden to make his own drawing, and then through Italy, where he familiarized himself with Raphael's pictures .
