Jakob Crescenz Seydelmann

Jakob Crescenz Seydelmann (* before July 26, 1750 in Dresden ; † March 27, 1829 there ) was a German painter and draftsman. He was the son of the electoral chamber musician Francesco Seydelmann (Franz Joseph Seydelmann). His brother was the musician and composer Franz Seydelmann .

Life

Seydelmann was a student of Giuseppe Canales and Giovanni Battista Casanova in Dresden and studied in Rome with Anton Raphael Mengs from 1772 . After returning to Dresden, he became a professor at the Academy of Arts in 1782 , but visited Rome nine more times and died on March 27, 1829 in Dresden.

He made himself known primarily through sepia drawings based on the Sistine Madonna and the Night by Antonio da Correggio as well as other famous paintings in the Dresden Picture Gallery , mostly the size of the originals, and was even considered the inventor of the sepia technique.

His wife Apollonia (nee de Forgue) was also an excellent artist. They married on June 17, 1767 in Venice. The couple were friends with the family of the painter Gerhard von Kügelgen .
