life and work

Apollonio Paolo Pessina was the son of foreman Giuseppe Pessina and Maria Piffaretti. After training at the drawing school in Mendrisio (1893–1895), he worked as an ornamentist like his brother Tommaso .

In 1904 Pessina stayed in Paris and took the name Paul. He studied at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs and at the École des Beaux-Arts . Pessina specialized as a sculptor in the studio of Jean-Antoine Injalbert and Gabriel Jules Thomas (1824–1905). In Paris he also met Charles Despiau and Léon-Ernest Drivier (1878–1951).

In 1908 and 1910, Pessina received the Federal grant for the fine arts. In 1912 he returned to Ticino and made numerous portraits for grave and memorial monuments. In Bellinzona he made a soldier memorial and in Giornico a battle memorial for the fallen in the battle of Giornico, which was inaugurated on August 1, 1937.

As a painter, Pessina mainly created landscapes and religious scenes in which he depicted figures from the family circle, who were characterized by strong color contrasts and light and shadow plays.

Pessina regularly took part in exhibitions at home and abroad; so in 1908 at the national exhibition in Bern and in 1909 at the international exhibitions in Paris and in 1910 in Brussels. In 1920 and 1926 he was a participant in the Venice Biennale .

In Ticino, Pessina had an impact on cultural and political life. He was, with interruptions, a member of the Grand Council from 1921 to 1939 and a member of the supervisory commission for drawing lessons in schools from 1948 to 1951 and was committed to the protection of monuments .

From 1920 until his death he was curator and curator of the Vincenzo Vela Museum in Ligornetto. In 2003 Pessani's former home and studio was inaugurated as the Museum Casa Pessina in Ligornetto . The museum houses his works of art and numerous documents, writings, sketches, books, photos, letters and postcards.
