As a result of the independence of the Republic of South Sudan on July 9, 2011 , the Holy See declared its intention to establish diplomatic relations with the new state. In the run-up to the declaration of independence, the Vatican sent a delegation, on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI. should wish the country peace and prosperity. In February 2013 it was announced that an Apostolic Nunciature and a South Sudanese embassy would be established at the Holy See by mutual agreement and at the request of both states (Vatican City and South Sudan) . Archbishop Hubertus van Megen has been Apostolic Nuncio in South Sudan since March 19, 2019 .
