The HomePod when it was launched at WWDC 2017

HomePod is a wireless speaker developed by the US company Apple with an emphasis on sound quality. In addition, it can help with everyday tasks as an intelligent personal assistant via the built-in Siri functionality and also offers smart home control.

history

The Homepod was presented at WWDC 2017 and was originally supposed to be released in December 2017, but the release had to be postponed. The HomePod has been available in Australia, the UK and the US since February 9, 2018. The US price is $ 349. The German sales start took place on June 18, 2018. The German sales price was € 349, although this was reduced to € 329 at the beginning of April.

features

The HomePod uses spatial orientation to recognize its position in the room and to adapt its sound. Six microphones for voice control recognize the voice from a distance and while music is playing. The A8 chip developed by Apple is responsible for complex tasks such as bass management using software modeling in real time.

AudioOS was initially used as the operating system, and since April 2020 Apple has been using tvOS as the basis, which also serves as the operating system for the Apple TV set-top boxes. While audioOS was a reduced iOS version, tvOS now runs software tailored to the HomePod on the device. The HomePod also works with Apple Music , Siri, and HomeKit- compatible devices. HomePod requires at least an iPhone 5s and iOS 11.2.5 or later. There is a display on top of the HomePod that shows a Siri waveform when the voice assistant is deployed and used for navigation. A special array of seven tweeters should provide room-filling sound. The device weighs 2.5 kg, is 172 mm high and 142 mm wide. With the software update to iOS 11.4, additional functions such as coupling HomePods to stereo pairs and multi-room audio with AirPlay 2 were added.

With the introduction of tvOS 14, it is now easier for users to play music from third-party providers.

criticism

“Apple's Siri speaker HomePod is apparently at war with wooden furniture. If you place the speaker on a piece of wood furniture, you could get annoyed a short time later by ugly white, ring-shaped stains on it. "

“The repair specialists cannot find a non-destructive way into the interior of the loudspeaker. Finally, they open the case with a saw. It is obviously optimized for stability and freedom from vibration. "
