The Apple Wireless Keyboard is a wireless keyboard for Macintosh computers. With the exception of the 1st generation, it can also be used with the iPad , iPod touch and iPhone via Bluetooth . In contrast to the wired version, there are no USB ports.

history

1st generation

On September 16, 2003, the first Apple Wireless Keyboard was presented at the Apple Expo . The device used four AA batteries and had an on / off switch on the back. Cables and USB connections were missing, but the appearance was similar to the wired version.

2nd generation

On August 7, 2007, Apple released a completely redesigned model of the Apple Wireless Keyboard . Like the wired Apple Keyboard , the model was thinner than its predecessor and had an aluminum case. Another innovation was the new function keys as well as media and dashboard controls. In contrast to the previous version, the new keyboard had a layout suitable for the MacBook . The on / off button was placed on the right side of the keyboard; the numeric keypad was missing. The new keyboard also only needed three AA batteries. The previous version A1255 was replaced in October 2009 by the slightly modified model A1314. The new model only needed two AA batteries, but now required at least Mac OS X 10.5.8 instead of Mac OS X 10.4.10 .

3rd generation

On October 13, 2015, a new version of the wireless keyboard with the name "Magic Keyboard", matching the Magic Mouse 2 and the Magic Trackpad 2, was presented. It is no longer powered by two AA batteries, but by an integrated lithium-ion accumulator . This can be charged via the Lightning connection known from the iPhone and iPad , which is placed in the middle on the rear edge. By using an integrated rechargeable battery instead of batteries, the thickness could be reduced from 1.8 cm to 1.1 cm. As a result, the back has been redesigned. It now has a single line instead of the second generation "rolled up" design. Like the previous generations, the Magic Keyboard has an aluminum front and side on which the keys sit. Their inscriptions are now in a lighter gray. The back is still made of plastic. The key travel has also been minimized, giving the keyboard a completely different typing experience. The F and Left & Right arrow keys have also been enlarged and the external dimensions reduced. It is now 27.9 × 11.49 cm. In comparison, the second generation had dimensions of 28.1 × 13 cm. However, the weight has increased from 73 g (excluding batteries) to 231 g. According to Apple, the keys are now 33% more stable, and the device as a whole has a more stable internal structure due to the elimination of AA batteries. The Bluetooth version has been changed from 2.1 to 4.2, and the price has increased by 40  to 119 € or 30  CHF to 109 CHF. At least OS X El Capitan is required to use the Magic Keyboard .

Use with Windows standard computers

Although Apple mainly supports Macintosh computers, the keyboard can also be operated under Windows as long as the computer supports Bluetooth. Activating the “Fn” and “Eject” keys requires the additional installation of a “WinA1314 driver”. The activation of the multimedia keys and the reassignment of the keys as well as the assignment of the keys Delto Ejectis also possible.
