The Applegate Valley AVA is a wine-growing region in the south of the US state Oregon . Modern viticulture began in this area around the mid-1960s, and it was recognized as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 2000. The area is considered the cradle of viticulture in Oregon.
Applegate Valley AVA is part of the parent Denomination of Origin Rogue Valley AVA , which in turn is part of the larger Southern Oregon AVA . The wine-growing region is named after the Applegate River and is located near the city of Jacksonville . The vineyards are at an altitude of 300 to 500 m above sea level. NN . The climate of the Applegate Valley is warmer than that of the Illinois Valley to the west, but cooler than that of the Bear Creek Valley to the east. The grape varieties Merlot , Cabernet Sauvignon , Syrah , Chardonnay and Zinfandel are grown , with the focus on the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties , which have proven themselves in Bordeaux .
