The wild time (original title: Après mai ) is a drama film, written and directed by Olivier Assayas . action
The students Gilles, Christine and Alain organize demos in the schoolyard and distribute leaflets. They arrange to meet for a demonstration, which is finally broken up by police force. Gilles and his friends decide to put up posters in the schoolyard and point out grievances. They are almost caught by workers from a neighboring construction site.
The next day, Gilles picks up his girlfriend Laure from the train and shows her his paintings. She explains to him that she will be moving to London two days later and that they shouldn't see each other for the time being. Gilles and his friends take revenge on the construction workers in the evening by attacking them with Molotov cocktails. In hiding, Gilles takes Christine's hand and they fall in love.
reception
“Assayas has fulfilled its mandate not to want to do entertainment cinema in revolutionary times and certainly not in non-revolutionary times. So he's just making a political entertainment film. It's cool and sweeping, but could be more political and a little less nostalgic. "
“Unable to give the conflicts of his characters more than superficial, ultimately banal expressions or even to capture the visions and utopias of the early seventies, Assayas' retro epic glides on for two hours and looks like a pleasant remake of Michelangelo Antonioni's hippie classic “Zabriskie Point” with the means of modern advertising film, in which, unlike in historical reality, there are no aesthetic irritations. The time at issue here may have been wild - the memory is all the more transfigured today. "
"Après mai is an extremely touching, gripping and at the same time airy and charmingly staged film that tells of how idealism can lead to melancholy, how the dreams of young people fade."
