Apra ( Panjabi : ਅੱਪਰਾ, Hindi : अपरा) is a village ( Census Town ) in Tehsil Phillaur in the Jalandhar district of Punjab (India) , which is also known as the golden city of Apra because of the gold jewelery trade .
Besides gold jewels, the village is also known for growing rice.
geography
Apra is on the main Phillaur to Banga road , 12 km from Phillaur, 46 km east of Jalandhar and 110 km from Chandigarh . The nearest train station is 15 km away in Goraya , the nearest regional airport in Ludhiana , and the nearest international airport is 142 km away in Amritsar .
Apra is the largest village in the area and has the main market. It has a hospital, its own state school and private schools. It has its own police station, which is also responsible for the surrounding villages.

The Azad Gate is a regularly renovated historical structure. Ram Mandir, Shiv Mandir and Bhai Mehar-Chand Ji Temple are Hindu temples. Sachidanand ji Ashram, Peer Baba Ji and Gurudwara Shri Kalgidhar are other religious sites.
The village has just under 10 banks such as the Kotak Mahindra Bank, the Oriental Bank of Commerce, the State Bank of India and the Jalandhar Central Co-operative Bank.
Known residents
- KD Verma (* in Apra) was the father of the US Ambassador Richard Verma . He emigrated to Canada around 1965, where he taught at the University of Pittsburgh in Johnstown for 40 years as a professor of English specializing in Indian literature.
- Bhagat Singh Thrush (* around 1905 in Chahal Kalan , Punjab) was a carpenter who died in Apra in 1987.
Demographics
According to the Census, Apra had 6,258 inhabitants in 2011, of which 51.4% were male and 48.6% were female. The literacy rate of 82.86% was higher than the 75.84% average in Punjab.
Most of the residents are Hindus (76.77%) and Sikhs (18.68%).
