Aquarium Gdynia
The Aquarium Gdynia ( Polish : Akwarium Gdyńskie ) is a museum in the port of Gdynia .
history
The museum at the Gdynia marina opened on June 21, 1971 and is now one of the largest aquariums in Poland . It emerged from the Institute of Fisheries Science (Morski Instytut Rybacki w Gdyni), the oldest marine research institution in Poland. Until 2003, the museum operated as the Muzeum Oceanograficzne i Akwarium Morskie . Extensive modernization work took place in 2003, and a new glass facade was built. On May 12, 2003 it was reopened as Aquarium Gdynia and in 2005 it received the status of a zoological garden . The museum is involved in the EU projects 4 SEAS and Balticmuseums 2.0.
Aquariums
Four major areas of marine and freshwater life are presented: the coral reef , the ocean , the Amazon and the Baltic Sea . Inhabitants of these ecosystems are presented on an exhibition area of around 900 m², which is spread over three floors. A total of 1,500 specimens of 250 marine and freshwater animal species - mainly fish , corals , reptiles and invertebrates - are presented in 68 tanks with a capacity of 200 to 10,000 liters.
Museum education
The Museum Education was established in 1998 to accommodate visitors for marine biology , marine ecology and the environment to raise awareness. Since then, numerous pupils from Tricity and from all over Poland have taken part in educational museum offers; in the 2007/2008 school year there were 27,369 students.
