Girolamo Sartorio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Girolamo Sartonio , also Hieronimo Sartonio , Hieronymo Sartonio , Geromino Sartonio or Geronimo Sartorio , (* before 1667 in Venice ; † April 1707 ) was an Italian architect who worked mainly in Hanover, Hamburg, Leipzig and Erfurt. Sartorio's classicist construction is based on Palladio .

Sartorio was an expert in setting up stage technology and theater machines and was consulted as a builder or as a consulting architect in the construction of opera houses in Hamburg (1677), Amsterdam (1681), Brussels, Hanover, Leipzig (1692/93) and Prague.

Life

From 1667 to 1685 Sartorio was a building manager in the service of the Hanoverian Duke Ernst August . During his activity in Hanover, important building measures were taken to beautify the city under his direction or with his assistance. He was in charge of the expansion of the Herrenhausen Gardens . He was involved in the expansion of the Leineschloss , where he built the small theater and provided it with decorations.

The castle bridge over the Leine was probably built according to his plans. Sartorio designed the Parnassus Fountain (demolished in 1802) on Neustädter Marktplatz . The first Hamburg opera house, the Oper am Gänsemarkt , was built according to his plans.

During his stay in Hanover, at the request of Leibniz , who was then working as a librarian in Wolfenbüttel , he wrote an appraisal for the construction of a library.

From 1692 he worked in Leipzig , where he set up the city's first opera stage at Leipziger Brühl . For this purpose, it was previously agreed by a contract on January 24, 1693 that the conductor Nicolaus Adam Strungk , the lawyer Heinrich Friedrich Glaser (1681–1767) and the architect Girolamo Sartorio would build the site for 10 years for an annual rent of 300 Thalers and were allowed to use an opera and comedy theater. The treaty came into force at Easter and expired at Easter 1703. The lease payments were made in three installments at each of the Leipzig trade fairs. In addition, the contract stipulated that if payment was not made, the opera house and its inventory would go to the landlord as an equivalent value. The contract was extended for another 10 years in 1703. After the death of his father, his son Johann Friedrich Sartorio entered the contract.

family

Girolamo was the brother of the Venetian composers Antonio Sartorio and Gasparo Sartorio (1625–1680). He married Emerantia Gertrud von Wintheim , daughter of the patrician Erich von Wintheim.

He had a son Johann Friedrich Sartorio who became a legal candidate.
