The Aradu (Donner) (Identifier: F89) is a frigate of the Nigerian Navy . The ship was the first of the MEKO 360 series at the German shipyard Blohm + Voss in 1978 to set keel and as arms exports to Nigeria sold. The Aradu is the largest ship in the fleet and was the most powerful military ship on the African continent when it was delivered. Due to a lack of financial and human resources, the ship was mostly on the quay or in the dock . In 2012 the Nigerian Navy put a second frigate into service with the Thunder .

Type

The Aradu was launched on January 25, 1980. The ship corresponds to the type MEKO 360 H1 . The ships of the MEKO series have a modular design. However, elements cannot be changed or replaced without reaching into the fuselage.

Today's helicopter is an Agusta A109E

When the ship was launched , the wife of the then Nigerian Senate President Wayas named the ship Republic in Hamburg . In the same year the name was changed to Aradu (thunder).

In 1982, by far the most powerful warship on the continent, it was seldom used. In 1987 there were two groundings and a collision. Blohm + Voss repaired the ship in Lagos from 1991 to 1994 . In 1997 the Aradu was again no longer operational.

In 2001 a general overhaul was carried out with American support. AWS 5 radar and PHS sonar have been replaced with modern equipment. A Agusta A 109E replaced the defective board helicopter of the type Westland Lynx .

In 2005 and 2007 the Aradu made voyages in international waters. She took part in the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and in the 200th anniversary of the rise of Brazil as an equal part of the Portuguese motherland.

The ship was in poor condition again at the end of the 2000s. In 2011 the then Nigerian Defense Minister Erelu Olusola Obada visited the Western Naval Command in Apapa . She promised to have the ship repaired and put back into operation. A technician who was involved in the construction of the ship should be called in.
