Arafa Hussein Mustafa

Arafa Hussein Mustafa (born February 27, 1940 in Cairo , Egypt , † January 1, 2019 ) was an Egyptian Semitist . He taught at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg until 2005 .

Arafa Mustafa studied at the University of Cairo and was a lecturer at the American University in Cairo . He came to Halle an der Saale in 1969 and received his doctorate at the Institute for Oriental Studies at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . The main focus in Mustafa's research spectrum was Akkadian and Ugaritic , especially comparative grammar . Furthermore, work was done on the Middle Canaanite and Aramaic . In the turn of time and after the reunification of his work has focused as acting director of the redesign and evaluation of the Institute of Oriental Studies. In 2005, Mustafa left active teaching at the Institute for Oriental Studies and retired. His later research focused on completing several books on the comparative grammar of the Semitic languages ​​and looking after the next generation of scholars.

His students include Sebastian Günther , Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Göttingen , and Harald Funk, author of the Langenscheidt language course “Arabic”.
