Sebastian Günther (Islamic scholar)

Sebastian Günther (born June 9, 1961 in Schlema ) is a German Arabist and Islamic scholar .

Life

After studying Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and a three-year research course, Sebastian Günther received his doctorate at the same university in 1989 and then worked there as a university assistant (1994-1998) in teaching and research until 1998. In 1991 he was a guest at the al-Azhar University , in 1992 at the University of Freiburg and from 1995 to 1996 at the Orient Institute in Beirut . Further research and teaching stays at al-Azhar University in Cairo followed in 1997, 2000 and 2002 and from 2004 to 2005 at theUnited Arab Emirates University in al-ʿAyn ( Abu Dhabi ) and in 2005 at the American University of Beirut .

From 1998 Sebastian Günther taught Arabic language and literature as assistant professor and then associate professor (with tenure ) at the University of Toronto , before being appointed professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Göttingen in 2008 as the successor to Tilman Nagel .

Services

Sebastian Günther has been a member of the editorial board of the journal Religion Compass since 2006, co-editor of the Islamic History and Civilization series with Wadad Kadi since 2007 and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Qur'anic Studies ( SOAS ) since 2009 .

Sebastian Günther has been a member of the Commission for Research into the Culture of the Late Middle Ages at the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen since March 2009 . He has also headed the Education and Religion from Early Imperial Roman Times to the Classical Period of Islam (EDRIS) research program at the Courant Research Center "Education and Religion" since 2009 .

It belongs to the American Oriental Society , the German Association of the Middle East (DAVO), the German Oriental Society , the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA), the Oriental Club at the University of Toronto and the Union Européenne des Arabisants et Islamisants ( UEAI).

Sebastian Günther conducts research, among other things, in the field of religious and philosophical literature of Islam and Arabic fiction . He is also interested in classical Islamic theories of education and upbringing.
