The Río Arauca is a tributary of the Orinoco in northern South America .

The river has its source in the Andes ( Páramo del Almorzadero ) in the north-central area of Colombia at an altitude of 4,100 meters. The Arauca flows east into the Orinoco in Venezuela . Parts of the river form the border between Colombia and Venezuela. The length of the Arauca is around 1050 km.
Catchment area and navigability
The very narrow and elongated catchment area of the Arauca is around 34,000 km². Around 80 percent of the river runs through the savannah-like alluvial plains ( Llanos de la Orinoquia ) and is navigable with small boats.
Places on the Río Arauca
On the river are the places Arauca in Colombia and opposite El Amparo de Apure in Venezuela. The international bridge José Antonio Páez connects both countries at this point.
