In Papua New Guinea it is grown in plantations . The area of the planted stands covers around 8,000 hectares. This species was introduced for experimental purposes in Australia, Fiji and the Malay Peninsula . The trade name is "Klinki Pine".

One finds Araucaria Hunsteinii at altitudes from 520 to 2,100 meters, where it forms mainly with various book plants mixed stands.

Systematics

Araucaria hunsteinii is the only species of the Intermedia section within the genus of Araucaria ( Araucaria ). It was first described as Araucaria hunsteinii in 1889 by Karl Moritz Schumann in Die Flora von Kaiser Wilhelms Land , 11, plate 4, f. 8th.

Synonyms for Araucaria hunsteinii K.Schum. are among others Araucaria schumanniana Warb. and Titanodendron hunsteinii (K.Schum.) AVBobrov & Melikyan , Araucaria hunsteinii var. klinkii (Lauterb. ex Engl.) Silba , Araucaria klinkii Lauterb. ex Engl. and Titanodendron klinkii (Lauterb. ex Engl.) AVBobrov & Melikyan .

Hazard and protection

Araucaria hunsteinii is listed as "low risk" on the IUCN Red List . It is pointed out, however, that a new check of the risk is necessary. The exploitation of the forests for the extraction of high-quality wood and for use as arable land is named as the main risk factor. Furthermore, fire and feral pigs pose a threat to the population. In Papua New Guinea, the export of araucaria wood is prohibited.
