history
The area around Arauco was a heavily contested area between the Mapuche and the Spaniards around 1550 . Pedro de Valdivia built the first Spanish fortress here in 1552. In 1554 Francisco de Villagra tried to advance from Concepción to the southern areas. On February 23, 1554 there was the battle of Marigüeñu with the leader ( Toqui ) of the Mapuche Lautaro . Villagra was ambushed and had to escape from the clutches. The Mapuche then began massive attacks on the fortresses of the Spaniards. Many cities were completely destroyed, including the Arauco fortress.
García Hurtado de Mendoza undertook a new campaign south in 1557. The Mapuche were able to inflict heavy losses on the Spaniards in the Battle of Millapoa . Nevertheless, the Spaniards managed to rebuild the fortresses Arauco and Tucapel , and to re-establish Cañete . The attacks of the Mapuche continued, in 1597 the Warchief ( Toqui ) of the Mapuche Pelantaro attacked Arauco again. In 1723 the Mapuche finally overran the fortress.
On July 2, 1852, the province of Arauco was established. Only on December 7, 1852, Arauco received city rights.
