The Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary is a 621  acres (2.5  km² ) large protected area between the towns of Northampton and East Hampton in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .

Protected area

Due to the different habitats (forests, meadows, open spaces, swamps and wetlands ) there are a large number of animal and plant species in the protected area . The clayey soil typical of the floodplains of the Connecticut River is particularly conducive to the growth of wildflowers . Visitors have a total of 5  mi (8  km ) of hiking trails, of which the Sensory Trail is a special 850  ft (259.1  m ) long section that is barrier-free . Canoeing or kayaking is possible on the Mill River , which flows through the reserve . There is an observation tower on the river bank and a wooden path that leads through the swamp for targeted observation of animals. A larger colony of great blue herons with around 60 nests lives in the reserve , but there are also a few pairs of bald eagles .

Environmental protection continues at the administrative level of the protected area. Among other things, targeted measures to save energy and water were implemented and a photovoltaic system with an output of around 10 kW was installed for self-sufficiency with electricity.
