The archive of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (Archiv LWL) is the archive of all offices and facilities of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe and part of the LWL archive office for Westphalia in Münster.
organization
In the LWL archives office, the LWL archive is assigned to the “Basic matters, restoration workshop, magazine , LWL archive” section. The department “Archive LWL” is subordinate to the department, in which three employees work, who, however, are also responsible for other tasks in the LWL archive office.
The legal basis is provided by the North Rhine-Westphalia Archives Act (ArchivG NRW), the statutes for the archive of the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association and the usage regulations for the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association (LWL archive) .
The holdings of the LWL Archives are used in the reading room of the LWL Archives Office, in which the holdings of the United Westfälische Adelsarchive eV and the Westphalian Literature Archive can also be used.
history
As early as January 23, 1959, a decree entitled “Preservation of archival documents” was issued by the then regional director Anton Köchling , which is perceived as a founding decree. April 1, 1959, from which the archive had its first full-time employee, is considered to be the date of foundation. Specialists were only assigned to the archive later. Before 1959, the archives of the Landschaftsverband and its predecessor, the Provincial Association of the Province of Westphalia , were deposited in the Münster State Archives . With the relocation of the LWL archive office within Münster in 1998 from Warendorfer Strasse to Jahnstrasse, the LWL archive received a magazine that was equipped according to modern standards and an increase in staff.
Stocks
The holdings of the archive consist of official documents from the administration of the landscape association and its legal predecessors as well as non-official documents as supplementary records. The non-official documents include documents from factions of the LWL landscape assembly and staff councils as well as documents from Westphalian-Lippe associations, estates of important personalities and other collection items. The latter includes maps, school murals and LWL publications.
The holdings are stored exclusively in the storage rooms of the LWL archive office in Münster. Tectonically , the LWL archive is divided into eight areas.

One focus is the traditions of the LWL clinics , which are often used in the context of euthanasia research. Patient files that were created before the middle of the 20th century have been completely taken over. In the case of patient files that were created afterwards, the transfer is formed using a special selection process. Only those files of patients whose last names begin with the letters A, D, St, X and Y are adopted.
