Egmont Roderich Carl von Rauch (born January 8, 1829 in Potsdam ; † August 26, 1875 near Oranienburg ) was a Prussian colonel and founder of the Saxon-Thuringian riding and horse breeding club and the horse races in Halle (Saale) .

Life

Parents, ancestors and siblings

Egmont von Rauch was the youngest son of Lieutenant General Friedrich Wilhelm von Rauch , the long-standing Prussian military representative at the St. Petersburg Tsar's court and adjutant general of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia , and his wife Laurette, née Countess von Moltke (1790–1864) from the house Wolde . His grandfather was Major General Bonaventura von Rauch , director of the Prussian Engineering Academy in Potsdam, and his great grandfather was General of the Cavalry Joachim Bernhard von Prittwitz , savior of King Frederick the Great in the Battle of Kunersdorf .

General of the cavalry Alfred Bonaventura von Rauch and Lieutenant General Friedrich Wilhelm von Rauch were his brothers. His sister Elise Countess von Fersen , née von Rauch, served as lady-in-waiting to the Russian Empress Alexandra Fjodorovna .

Military background

Rauch began his military career in the traditional 3rd Hussar Regiment of the Prussian Army , the so-called Zietenhusars. As a second lieutenant he came to Brandenburg an der Havel in 1847 to the 6th Cuirassier Regiment called Emperor Nikolaus I of Russia , in which his brother Friedrich Wilhelm was already serving. Rauch was promoted to Prime Lieutenant in 1858 and - together with his brother - to Rittmeister in 1859 . In 1860 he led the body squadron of his regiment in Saint Petersburg on the occasion of the funeral ceremonies for the Russian Empress Alexandra Fjodorovna, the sister of Emperor Wilhelm I. With his squadron he fought in the war against Denmark in 1864 in front of Düppel and received the Order of the Crown, IV class with swords.

In 1866 Rauch switched to the General Staff and was used as a major in the staff of the 6th Division stationed in Brandenburg an der Havel . In 1867 he became a regular staff officer with the Thuringian Hussar Regiment No. 12 in Weißenfels and Merseburg . With the regiment he fought in the war against France near Beaumont and before Paris . Rauch received the Iron Cross and the Mecklenburg Military Merit Cross, 2nd class, for his achievements . On April 19, 1871 Rauch was entrusted with the management of the regiment of the Zieten Hussars in Rathenow , in which his military career had started. After promotion to lieutenant colonel on August 25, 1871, he was appointed commander of the 3rd Hussar Regiment on November 4, 1871. In 1873 he was promoted to colonel.

Horse racing

Rauch emerged - like his brother Alfred Bonaventura von Rauch and his cousin Fedor von Rauch - in horse racing as a racing and gentleman rider and later as the founder of racing clubs and racing fields. During his service with the Thuringian Hussar Regiment No. 12, he founded the Saxon-Thuringian Riding and Horse Breeding Association and organized the first horse races in nearby Halle (Saale). To commemorate this, the Major von Rauch race was held in 1997 on the Halle horse racing track.

As commander of the Zieten Hussars and at the same time as founding chairman, Colonel Egmont von Rauch established the Havelländisch-Priegnitz'schen or the Märkische Reiter- und Pferdzuchtverein on February 6, 1875, which held its races in Pritzwalk and Brandenburg an der Havel. Until his death, Rauch also worked on the representative committee of the Berlin-based Union Club , the roof facility for horse racing in the German Empire.

Rauch suffered a fatal stroke in the saddle on August 26, 1875 in front of the front of his soldiers during brigade exercise on the parade field near Oranienburg. In September 1875, the then lieutenant colonel and later general of the cavalry Heinrich von Rosenberg (1833–1900), who also had a formative influence on horse racing, was appointed his successor .

family

Rauch married Louise von Schierstaedt (1838–1905), daughter of Hermann von Schierstaedt, Fideikommi on Dahlen, and his wife Fatime, née von Zychlinski, on August 3, 1857 , in Dahlen in the Central Markets.

The marriage resulted in three daughters:

The married couple Egmont and Louise von Rauch are buried in Schierstaedt's hereditary funeral in Dahlen. His three daughters Elise, Anna and Marie have also found their final resting place there. The Rauch graves have been preserved. The von Schierstädt family's hereditary funeral is outside the estate park; originally there was a direct line of sight between the manor house and the burial place.
