The Westphalian Literature Archive (WLA) is an institution of the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe (LWL) for literary legacies and bequests in Westphalia and Lippe and an information point with competent advice on all questions relating to the subject of "literary legacies in Westphalia".

founding

With the establishment of the WLA in September 2001, the literary estate maintenance in Westphalia-Lippe, which had structural deficits for a long time, should be improved and promoted. The shortcomings concerned:

  • lack of responsibility for inheritance acquisition (competition or random principle)
  • missing criteria in the assessment of the archival worthiness of the estate
  • lack of advice from the authors or the heirs
  • lack of Germanic competence of the archives
  • lack of resources for estate development

The literature commission for Westphalia , which has existed since 1998, has been considering , in close cooperation with the cultural maintenance department of the regional association and the LWL archives office for Westphalia , for better coordination and responsibility for literary estates in Westphalia. The committees formulated the framework for the establishment of the Westphalian Literature Archive. A corresponding parliamentary proposal was approved in spring 2001 by the culture committee and the landscape assembly.

With the symbolic handover of the estate of the Westphalian poet Ernst Meister (1911–1979) on the occasion of his 90th birthday on September 3, 2001, the Westphalian Literature Archive was presented to the public.

Organization and task

Research opportunities

The holdings of the WLA and online finding aids can be researched in the Archive in North Rhine-Westphalia portal, as well as in the central database of papers of the Federal Archives and in the Kalliope union catalog , the evidence of papers and autographs by the Berlin State Library .

Since the WLA sees itself as an information point for questions about the estate situation in Westphalia, a portal was created in 2005 in cooperation with the NRW Literature Council with evidence of over 600 literary traditions in more than 80 archives in Westphalia. The estate database is logistically networked with the online version of the "Westphalian Author's Lexicon" , which is an important step towards a comprehensive cadastre of Westphalian writers' bequests.

All portals offer interested users free research options.
