The Archiwum Państwowe w Lesznie (AP) ( German State Archives Leszno ) is the state archive in Leszno (Lissa) in the Greater Poland Voivodeship in Poland . It was established in 1950 as an archive for several powiate (circles) .

history

After changes in the political system of the Republic of Poland , the Ministry of Education ordered the creation of Powiate Archives on July 21, 1950. In Poland, 52 archives have been created, and in the Poznan Voivodeship, the Poznan State Archive has six branches in the Powiat. On November 10, 1950, the director of the State Archives in Poznan, Kazimierz Kaczmarczyk, commissioned Władysław Chojnacki to set up the branch in Leszno. By decree of March 29, 1951, these branches were given the status of state archives for the powiate. In the early years, the archive monitored regional archives of companies and organizations, secured archival materials and passed them on to the State Archives in Poznan. It was not until 1957 that it, like other state archives at Powiate level, was granted the right to keep archival material permanently. Since 1958, the archive has been open to scientists, students, regional and company historians and family researchers .

Archives building (1965–2002)

The spatial situation of the archive was very difficult for many years. When it was founded, it consisted of only one room on Bolesława Chrobrego Street. The minimum requirements for the temporary storage of archival material were not met. The provisional period lasted until the 1960s. After several years of efforts, the city administration gave the archive space in the neighboring, former grammar school of the evangelical reformed community. The assignments in the building, which was built in 1714, took place between 1965 and 1981.

Until the administrative reform of 1975 the archive in Leszno was referred to as “Powiatowe Archiwum Państwowe w Lesznie” (State Archives for Powiate in Leszno) . It included the Powiate Gostyński , Kościański , Leszczyński , Rawicki and Wolsztyński and the independent city of Leszno. In addition, it was responsible for the powiat Wschowski in the years 1950–1953 , which in 1953 came under the supervision of the State Archives in Zielona Góra (Grünberg) , which was created that year .

The administrative reform of June 1975 brought about considerable changes. The powiate were dissolved and many new voivodeships were founded, including the Leszno voivodeship . The organization of the archives was adapted to the changed structure of the administration. On February 1, 1976, the State Archives in Leszno became “Wojewódzkie Archiwum Państwowe” (Voivodeship State Archives) . The area of responsibility of the archive encompassed the Leszno Voivodeship, i.e. south-western Greater Poland and the Powiate Górowski (today Lower Silesian Voivodeship ) and Wschowski ( Lubusz Voivodeship ), which have existed since 1999 . With a new archive law, the name was shortened in 1983 to "Archiwum Państwowe".

After the political change, large amounts of archive material had to be taken over from dissolved organizations since 1990. The previous building soon turned out to be too small for the archive. The location search could only be completed in 2000. After a building exchange and the necessary renovations, the State Archives opened in October 2002 at ulica Ludwika Solskiego 71. By the end of 1961, the number of files had increased from 19,896 units of description to 60,491 in 1975 and 106,249 in 2002. For several years the archive material has been made accessible by the database “IZA” and since 2014 by the integrated archive information system “ZoSIA”.
