Arcos is a former municipality ( freguesia ) in northwestern Portugal .

History and sights

Mamoas and other finds prove a prehistoric settlement. Traces can also be found from the Castro culture and the subsequent presence of the Romans . According to tradition, the Moors maintained a small fortress here; however, there is currently no evidence of this.

The listed Romanesque bridge dates from the 12th century. Since 1836 Arcos was a parish in the county of Vila do Conde. According to the law, after the local elections on September 29, 2013, the municipality was merged with the municipality of Rio Mau to form the new municipality of União de Freguesias de Rio Mau e Arcos .

As part of the municipal reorganization, the municipality of Arcos was merged with Rio Mau on September 29, 2013 to form the União de Freguesias de Rio Mau e Arcos . The seat of the new community will be in Rio Mau after the reorganization has been implemented.
