The Ardila near Moura in Portugal |
The Ardila ( Spanish Río Ardila ) is a left tributary of the Guadiana that flows through both Spain and Portugal . It rises south of Monesterio in the Badajoz province in Extremadura . Its course initially leads north. At Valencia del Ventoso it changes its path in a south-westerly direction, which it maintains up to the mouth.
It crosses the southern parts of the municipalities of Jerez de los Caballeros and Oliva de la Frontera on Spanish territory . Then it forms the border with Portugal for 25 km . Finally, it flows into the Guadiana south of the Alqueva reservoir near the Portuguese city of Moura . Its main tributary is the Benferre . Its catchment area covers a total area of 1,821.61 km², 1,043 km² of which is in Spain.
