Ardrossan is a small town on the Yorke Peninsula ( English Yorke Peninsula ) in the Australian state of South Australia .

The city was founded at the end of the 19th century by wheat farmers and hauliers who needed the necessary infrastructure to be able to ship their goods via the Gulf of Saint Vincent to Port Adelaide .

The city was named on November 5, 1873 by James Fergusson after the seaport of Ardrossan in Scotland.

history

In 1878 the first pier was built to allow wheat to be loaded onto steamers and windjammers .

Between the years 1880 and 1935 the place gained a certain notoriety, as it was there that the Clarence Smith's factory manufactured the stump-jump plow , one of the first and most important inventions in South Australia .

In the early 1900s, the population increased sharply due to the immigration of surrounding farmers.

During the Depression in the 1930s, the economy stagnated in almost complete until 1950 a large dolomite - mining company BHP Billiton was opened. The rock is used in Whyalla on the Eyre Peninsula and in Port Kembla as an additive in steel production. For this purpose, a new one-kilometer-long pier was built where ships can be loaded with grain, dolomite and salt from the salt works in Price , 10 kilometers to the north . Large grain silos were also built there at this time .

tourism

Today tourism is the main economic factor in the small town. The city has become a popular weekend getaway for Adelaide residents.

About 15 kilometers off the coast is the historic Zanoni shipwreck , which is very popular with divers. The ship sank on February 11, 1867 and was not discovered until April 17, 1983, 126 years later. It is one of the best preserved sunken sailing ships in Australia.
