Johan Arendo Sjouke Joustra (born July 19, 1957 in Vlissingen ) is a Dutch journalist . He has been editor-in-chief of the weekly political magazine Elsevier since 2000 .

Life

Joustra studied journalism at the School voor de Journalistiek in Utrecht (1976–79) and Iowa State University (1979–80). From 1980 to 1989 he worked for the daily de Volkskrant in succession in the economic and social affairs, parliament and politics departments. He then moved to Elsevier magazine , for which he was a correspondent in Brussels from 1989 to 1996 . In 1993, at his suggestion, Pim Fortuyn was brought into the paper as a columnist, who wrote around 400 columns by September 2001. In 1996, Joustra became Vice President of Elsevier and then officially deputy editor-in-chief. During an illness of editor-in-chief Schoo, he represented him for some time and then took over the management of the daily editorial business.

Joustra's friend Pieter Broertjes , editor-in-chief at de Volkskrant , offered him at the end of the millennium to switch to the same position at Volkskrant ; as a probable successor to Schoo, however, the internal option seemed more attractive to him than the deputy editor-in-chief of a daily newspaper. Broertjes now offered the post to Schoo, who surprisingly accepted and switched to Volkskrant on January 1, 2000 . Since, in the opinion of the board of directors and the editorial team, Joustra had already proven himself sufficiently, he was appointed as his successor.

In Joustra's time, among other things, the online presence, which was launched very late (2004) compared to the Dutch daily newspapers, falls. Under his leadership, Elsevier has been one of the few successful models in print journalism alongside free newspapers since the turn of the millennium. In contrast to almost all other regional and national newspapers (excluding free newspapers) and political magazines in the Netherlands, it was not only possible to avoid a decrease in circulation, but even to achieve a slight increase in circulation become. In 2006 Joustra took over the chairmanship of the “ Nederlands Genootschap van Hoofdredacteuren ” (Dutch society of editors-in-chief) as the successor to Broertjes .

In addition to a number of his own books, Joustra was also responsible for editing the book "Samen Onderweg" (1991) by the then Dutch Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers , about which he had already written a biography in 1989.
