In 1812 the government commissioned Vicente López y Planes to write a national anthem for the country that had recently become independent . He wrote a nine-stanza text with a chorus after each stanza. The music was composed by Blas Parera . On May 11, 1813, the new national anthem was presented to the National Assembly under the title "Marcha Patriótica"; later it was also known under the titles "Canción Patriótica Nacional" and "Canción Patriótica". In 1924 it was decided that only the first stanza with the refrain would be used as the national anthem.
