description

Vegetative characteristics

The Argentine waterweed is an evergreen, perennial , aquatic plant that reaches stature lengths of 10 to 200 centimeters. The dark green leaves are mostly slack and flat - not, as with other waterweed species, stiff, twisted or bent back. They are linear and long, pointed, 7.5 to 15 times as long as they are wide, and usually grow lively in threes (2–4) on flowing stems. The stem nodes are greenish.

Generative characteristics

The Argentine waterweed is dioeciously separated sex ( diocesan ). The petals of the flowers protruding from the water are colored white and slightly longer than the sepals . Male flowers are 5.5 to 9.5 millimeters in diameter and are not detached from the stem during flowering.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 48.

Occurrence

The Argentine waterweed thrives in stagnant and flowing waters from southern Uruguay to Argentina . It was naturalized in France and Germany in 1964 and, like the other Elodea species, is considered a neophyte in Europe . In Europe there are only male plants, so that reproduction is purely vegetative. (According to other information, only plants with female flowers occur in Germany.) The Argentine waterweed thrives in societies of the Ranunculion fluitantis association.

use

The Argentine waterweed is used in mild winter areas as an ornamental plant for garden ponds and aquariums.
