Argna biplicata is a land snail belonging tothe Argnidae family .

features

The case is 4 to 4.5 mm high and 1.5 to 1.7 mm wide or thick. It is long and cylindrical with 8 to 9 slightly arched, slowly increasing whorls. It hardly tapers towards the truncated apex. The navel is very tight. The mouth is relatively small and lens-shaped in the turn axis. The edge of the mouth is turned up wide and sharp-edged, sometimes a little thickened. Four main teeth protrude into the mouth: a columellar and a parital tooth as well as two unequal length, inwardly converging palatal teeth. The case is colored pale yellow, shiny and translucent on the outside. It is almost smooth and only shows very fine streaking.

Geographical occurrence, habitat and way of life

The species occurs very locally in the Alpes-Maritimes (France), northern Spain ( Valencia ), Liguria (Italy), in the northern Apennines, as well as in the Italian and Austrian southern Alps. A small occurrence near Salzburg is the only occurrence north of the main Alpine ridge. There are other isolated occurrences in Apulia (Prov. Cosenza ) and in Basilicata (Prov. Potenza ). The subspecies Argna biplicata ulterior Klemm , 1962 occurs in Greece.

Argna biplicata prefers moist and protected habitats, such as in the mulch, under leaf litter and moss, as well as on wood in crevices and under rock rubble. So the species lives very hidden and is very difficult to find alive. It occurs between 500 and 1500 m above sea level. Because of the very hidden way of life, very little is known about the biology of the species.

Systematics

The type locality for the species is in southern France. The populations in South Tyrol, Carinthia, Styria and Salzburg, on the other hand, are differentiated as Argna biplicata excessiva ( Gredler , 1856). Another subspecies is Argna biplicata ulterior Klemm , 1962 in Greece.

Hazard and protection

The species is on the Red List of Mollusks in Carinthia. It is listed there in the R category, i. H. it is a rare species.
