Argos Zodhiates

Argos Zodhiates (in German: Argos Zodiatis, Greek Άργος Ζωδιάτης ; * 1913 in Cyprus , † 1979 in Boston ) was a pastor of the Greek Evangelical Church . Because of his radio work and his way of promoting young pastors, he was one of the most influential figures in the Church.

biography

The native Cypriot came to Egypt with his parents. There he heard an evangelical sermon by the evangelist Agianoglu (Αγιάνογλου) and converted. Due to his influence, his younger brother and mother also converted to the evangelical church. He then studied at the American University in Cairo , at the Bible School of Damascus (Βιβλική Σχολή της Δαμασκού) and earned a Master of Arts from Northwestern University in Chicago and a Ph.D from Andover Newton Seminary in Boston. Then he was first pastor in Thessaloniki and in Katerini. As an English citizen he had to leave Greece in 1963 due to the military coup and was pastor first in New York (1960-1970), then in Boston (1970-1979), from where he had an influence on the development of the Greek Church through a radio mission. He raised entire generations of pastors.

In 1970 a radio program was introduced that recorded sermons in Greek and broadcast them on AM radio . Under the direction of Zodhiatis, the Greek Evangelical Church in Boston grew. In 1972 the congregation acquired the First Church of Newton building from the Congregationalist congregation and in 1978 added a classroom and two apartments to the building. Theology students who came to Boston to study were accepted there. Over ten years Zodhiatis worked with Aneta Serafimidis , a missionary of the Armenian Bible Church, a Moravian Church .

family

Zodhiatis was married to Viktoria Tektonidou (Βικτώρια Τεκτονίδου). With her he had four children: Evniki (Ευνίκη), Fedon (Φαίδων), Rea (Ρέα) and Anastasios (Αναστάσιος). He is the brother of Spiros Zodhiates . The church holiday camp in Leptokarya (Βιβλικό Κέντρο "ΑΡΓΟΣ ΖΩΔΙΑΤΗΣ") is named after him.
