Aristophanes (painter)
Aristophanes ( Greek Ἀριστοφάνης ) was a Greek vase painter of the Attic red-figure style who lived between 430 and 400 BC. Was active in Athens .
We know of three signed works by him, two bowls made by Erginos in Berlin ( Antikensammlung ) and Boston ( Museum of Fine Arts ) and a small fragment of a bell crater in Agrigento ( Museo Archeologico Regionale ). Based on these works, a number of other works are ascribed to him.
For stylistic reasons, he was also assigned black-figure Panathenaic price amphoras from the Kuban group .
Aristophanes belongs to the environment of the Meidias painter . He strove to make his body appear as alive as possible. They are characterized by carefully separated, sometimes a little artificial lines, which are particularly visible in the clothes and hair of his figures.
