Harmony OS , also known as Hongmeng OS ( Chinese  鸿 蒙 OS , Pinyin Hóngméng OS ) in China , is a cross-device operating system that Huawei has been developing since 2012.

Announcements related to US actions

In a newspaper interview in Die Welt , Huawei boss Richard Yu stated that Huawei could use its own operating system as a plan B if US restrictions prevented Android or Windows from being used, although one would rather work with the ecosystems of Google and Microsoft.

Since the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) comes to a large extent from Google, this is also subject to US trade regulations, according to commercial lawyer Kevin Wolf.

Huawei also treated EMUI as an operating system since June 2019. At the annual developer conference in August 2019, Huawei announced that the Harmony OS operating system was a microkernel system suitable for many purposes. Like Android Auto and Apple's CarPlay, Harmony OS will be used in future as a HiCar system in cars.

Presentation of the operating system

During a developer conference on August 9, 2019, Huawei announced that Harmony OS would be used as a distributed microkernel system under an open source license for a wide range of devices with a wide variety of storage sizes: from sensors and smart devices to cars and smartwatches to smartphones and computers . The first device to hit the market with Harmony OS was the Honor Vision smart TV , which was launched in China in mid-August 2019. Huawei manager Richard Yu said at the HDC developer conference in Dongguan, China on August 9, 2019 that Huawei wanted to continue working with Android for smartphones for the time being.

Further development of the operating system

HarmonyOS 2.0 should appear in 2020 with its own microkernel, version 3.0 should follow in 2021. Starting with version 2.0 planned for 2020, Huawei wants to use the operating system in smartwatches, health bracelets, smart screens, speakers and other devices. Headphones are to be supported from 2021, and VR glasses and other small devices are to follow in 2022. As of September 2019, Huawei did not plan to use the operating system in its smartphones.

Technical structure of the operating system

The Harmony OS microkernel only provides the most essential basic functions. Further services are outsourced to processes or libraries. This means that you do not need root access for these functions. Development goals are seamless portability, low latency and high security. The Ark Compiler included in the delivery was previously made available to Android developers so that they could easily compile their Android apps for Harmony OS. It supports several programming languages including Java, C and C ++.

Apps

Direct execution of Android - apps will not be supported, but it should be possible for developers to recompile the source code of an Android app with little changes for Harmony OS.

brand names

On May 24, 2019, Huawei registered "Hongmeng OS" as a trademark in China for active validity until May 13, 2029. On the same day, Huawei registered the following trademarks with the European Union Intellectual Property Office and the respective offices of the member states:
