Arkoma is a city in Le Flore County in the US state of Oklahoma . According to the 2000 census , it had a population of 2,180 in an area of ​​9.3 square kilometers; the population density is 240 per square kilometer.

The place is in the far east of Oklahoma, right on the border with Arkansas . The city of Fort Smith begins immediately across the border . In the west, the Poteau River flows past Arkoma.

The name "Arkoma" is a suitcase word , it is composed of Ark ansas and Oklah oma .

history

The site was acquired by Capt. James Reynolds, an American Civil War veteran who made his fortune in Oklahoma. Reynolds developed Arkoma as a housing estate for Ft. Smith, built apartment houses and provided transport links - a tram was in operation until 1917. Arkoma has been an independent community ( town ) in Le Flore County since 1946 . The 1950 census showed 1691 inhabitants, in 1970 more than 2000 inhabitants were counted for the first time. The High School Arkomas opened in the 1970s.

Demographics

The 2,180 inhabitants of Arkoma determined in the census in 2000 lived in 877 households; including 596 families. The population density was 240 per square kilometer. 975 residential units were recorded in the village. Among the population were 89.2 percent white, 0.4 percent African American, 5.8 percent American Indian, 0.3 percent Asian and 0.9 percent of other races; 3.4 percent said they belonged to several ethnic groups.

Of the 877 households, 28 percent had children under the age of 18; 50 percent were married couples living together. 29 percent of the households were single households. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.97.

The population was distributed among 24.6 percent under 18 years of age, 8.8 percent from 18 to 24 years of age, 25.9 percent from 25 to 44 years of age, 25.8 percent from 45 to 64 years of age and 15.0 percent of the age of 65 or older. The median age was 38 years.

The median household income was $ 23,718 and the median family income was $ 31,500. The per capita income for Arkoma was $ 13,467. 20.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.

Cultural monuments

The Arkoma School was established in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration . It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988 .
