Arlit is a department in the region of Agadez in Niger .

The department is located in the north of the country on the border with Algeria . It consists of the township of Arlit and the rural parishes of Dannet and Gougaram . The eponymous capital of the department is Arlit.

history

The area of ​​the department Arlit originally belonged to the Arrondissement Agadez , created in 1964 , which emerged from a district ( circonscription ) of the same name in the Aïr region. The Arrondissement of Arlit was founded on April 10, 1969. The rest of the Agadez arrondissement was renamed the Tchirozérine arrondissement . In 1998 the previous Arrondissements of Nigers were converted into departments, each headed by a prefect appointed by the Council of Ministers. The department has been divided into municipalities since 2002. Before that, it consisted of the urban center Arlit and a residual zone. In 2011 Iférouane was separated from the Arlit department as a separate department. Until the reorganization of the departments this year, Arlit had an area of ​​216,744 square kilometers.

According to the 2012 census, the Arlit department has 105,025 inhabitants. In the 2001 census, before the separation of Iférouane, there were 98,170 inhabitants, in the 1988 census 68,282 inhabitants and in the 1977 census 25,436 inhabitants.
