Armacell International SA is a manufacturer of flexible insulation materials in the field of plant insulation and in the field of technical foams.

Corporate structure

The main gate of the location in Münster

Armacell employs around 3000 people around the world and operates 25 production sites in 16 countries on four continents, with plants and a. in the People's Republic of China , Thailand , India , Brazil , Saudi Arabia and South Korea .

sustainability

Together with other insulation companies, Armacell founded the European Foundation for Industrial Insulation (EiiF) in 2009, which promotes the use of optimized insulation systems in industrial plants and brings the ecological and economic opportunities of these measures to public awareness.

In June 2015, Armacell was the first manufacturer of flexible technical insulation materials to present Environmental Product Declarations , which are based on an independently collected life cycle assessment. Environmental product declarations (EPDs) are becoming increasingly important in the construction industry: They present the environmental impacts of construction products in a transparent, independent and comprehensible manner and provide detailed information with reliable figures and data. As a “sustainability pass”, EPDs form the basis for planning green buildings in accordance with building certification systems such as LEED , BREEAM or DGNB .

In order to quantify the energy-saving potential that can be realized by insulating heating and hot water pipes in residential buildings precisely and representative, Armacell commissioned the Center for Environmentally Conscious Building (ZuB) at the University of Kassel to carry out a scientific study. In 2009, Armacell was the first manufacturer of flexible insulation materials in the world to present a comprehensive life cycle assessment based on this and other own studies . Most of the worldwide locations are certified according to the environmental standard ISO 14000 and all European plants are already certified.

Innovations

Armacell operates four research and development centers: while material formulations and process technologies are developed centrally in Münster (Germany), products are developed and further optimized in Mebane (North Carolina, USA), Thimister-Clermont (Belgium) and Guangzhou (China). Armacell holds over 200 active patents worldwide, 176 of which were approved between 2010 and 2013 alone.

Business areas

The Advanced Insulation division develops flexible foams for insulating technical systems in markets in which energy distribution is necessary, e.g. B. in residential and non-residential buildings, in industrial applications and in the oil and gas industry.

The Engineered Foams division develops lightweight foams for a variety of end markets, including a. include the automotive and wind industries. The Engineered Foams division aims at the needs of various markets and applications in which the weight and robustness of the products are of major importance.

history

Armacell International emerged in June 2000 as part of a management buyout of the insulation division of Armstrong World Industries . Its history goes back to the year 1899, when Thomas Armstrong, founder of Armstrong World Industries, started with the production of cork insulation boards. The rise of the insulation material division began in 1954 with Armaflex, the first flexible technical insulation for pipes. Since then it has become a synonym for flexible foam plastic insulation.

Expansion into Europe began in 1959. One year later, on May 23, 1960, the foundation stone was laid for the first production facility in Münster, Armstrong Kork GmbH, but initially for floor coverings. Five years later, as part of the further expansion in Europe, the first sales office and the European headquarters of Armstrong World Industries were set up in Düsseldorf . After the demand for Armaflex continued to rise, the decision was made in 1967 to build a new production facility for Armaflex in Münster, which has since grown into the Group's largest production facility.

The energy crisis in the 1970s with the ensuing Energy Saving Act of 1978 brought further growth and innovations in the area of insulation for heating systems . In 1984 the Swiss plant Rohtrist and the associated brand Tubolit were taken over. This was the first time that insulation based on polyethylene could be offered. Five years later, it was the brand that was the first to refrain from using CFCs .

In 1991 the Münster location was expanded into a high-tech center, in which research and development in the field of insulation was concentrated. In June 2000, the insulation division was spun off into an independent company. In this context, all rights to the Armaflex and Tubolit brands were transferred to the newly founded Armacell International Holding.

In 2001 the company expanded into Asia through the takeover of a Thai company in the field of technical insulation. In the same year Armacell founded a new company division with a focus on technical foams. After further growth, Armacell took over the Ensolite and Oletex brands and the associated companies of the US RBX group in 2004. Armacell continued to expand in 2005 and took over the US manufacturer of fine-cell block foams, Monarch Rubber, as well as Fagerdala Benelux SA, a manufacturer of thermoplastic foams in Europe. Further acquisitions followed in 2008 with MDS Leuze, which manufactures sheet metal jackets, and the PropaCene division of the US foam manufacturer Cellect.
