Poor servants of Divine Providence

Poor Servants of Divine Providence or Opera Don Calabria ( Latin Congregatio Pauperum Servorum Divinae Providentiae , Poor Servants of Divine Providence ' ) is an institute under papal law . The abbreviation for the order is PSDP .

history

The congregation grew out of the Casa Buoni Fanciulli, which was founded on November 26th, 1907 by the Italian priest Giovanni Calabria in Verona to look after poor and abandoned children. On February 11, 1932, Girolamo Cardinale , Bishop of Verona , approved the establishment of a Society of Priests. She was active in the diocesan territory under the name Poveri Servi della Divina Provvidenza.

On April 25, 1949, the community received from Pope Pius XII. the Decretum laudis and was approved by the Holy See on December 15, 1956.

The female branch called Povere Serve della Divina Provvidenza was founded in 1910 and recognized in 1981.

The founder Giovanni Calabria was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1988 . On April 18, 1999, the same Pope was canonized .

When consistory in 2019 Pope appointed Francis with Eugenio Dal Corso the first Cardinal of the Institute.

The religious of the Opera Don care for needy children and the elderly.

In addition to Italy, the Order is also represented in Africa ( Angola , Kenya ), in America ( Argentina , Brazil , Chile , Colombia , Paraguay , Uruguay ), in Asia ( Philippines , India ), in Romania and in Russia . The General Curia is in Verona .

On December 31, 2005, the institute had 72 houses and 317 religious, including 181 priests .
