Soleirols Grasnelke ( Armeria soleirolii ) is a plant from the genus of Grasnelken ( Armeria ) within the family of plumbaginaceae (Plumbaginaceae). This rare, endangered endemic is native only to Corsica .

Description, phenology and ecology

Inflorescences with white flowers

Soleirols carnation grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of between 15 and 25 centimeters. It forms dense cushions that slightly lignify at the base. The gray-green leaves are grass-like and narrow with a length of 4 to 10 centimeters and a width of 2 to 4 millimeters.

The pink to white, hermaphrodite flowers are in a rounded, head-shaped inflorescence from 1.4 to 1.8 centimeters in diameter.

The flowering period extends from April to June. The fruit ripens from July. The seeds are spread with the wind ( anemochory ). The dry flower heads can remain on the cushion for a long time.

Occurrence and endangerment

Soleirol's carnation is endemic to northern Corsica. The distribution area extends from the Revellata peninsula in the north over the Gulf of Girolata to the Gulf of Porto in the south.

This semi-halophilic species thrives on rocks on the coast and tolerates spray and hot climatic conditions well. It has so far been found at altitudes of 5 to 55, but sometimes up to 100 meters.

Armeria soleirolii is rated "Endangered" in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species . Only five sites with a total area of less than 20 km² in a total distribution area of only 114 km² are known. The competition from invasive plant species endangers the population.

Taxonomy

It was first described in 1830 under the name ( Basionym ) Statice soleirolii by Duby in Aug. Pyrami de Candolle Botanicon Gallicum, pars secunda, Plantas Cellulares , p. 1032. The new combination to Armeria soleirolii (Duby) Godr. was published in 1853 by Dominique Alexandre Godron in Flore de France , Volume 2, p. 737. The specific epithet soleirolii honors Joseph François Soleirol (1796–1863).
