Armin Klein (cultural scientist)

Armin Klein (born September 25, 1951 in Wiesbaden ) is a German cultural scientist .

Life

After graduating from the Main Taunus School in Hofheim am Taunus in 1971 , he studied German , political science and philosophy at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . From 1979 to 1981 he was head dramaturge at the Theater am Turm in Frankfurt am Main and from 1981 to 1994 cultural advisor for the university town of Marburg . In 1992, Klein received his doctorate as Dr. phil. at the University of Marburg . From 1994 until his retirement at the end of the 2016/17 winter semester, he was Professor of Cultural Studies and Cultural Management at the Institute for Cultural Management at the Ludwigsburg University of Education . His successor was Andrea Hausmann from the European University Viadrina Frankfurt an der Oder. Klein taught as a guest lecturer a. a. at the Universities of Basel and Freiburg and the University of Applied Sciences Winterthur / Zurich . Numerous seminars and workshops in Taiwan, Shanghai, Poland, Lithuania, Romania, Bulgaria, Switzerland and Austria. From 2006 to 2012 he was a member of the board of the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft . Armin Klein currently teaches advanced training for cultural managers and as a consultant for various cultural institutions.

Publications

As an author and editor, Klein has published numerous publications on the subject of cultural management . His focus is on cultural marketing , cultural policy , organizational theory , project management and visitor loyalty for cultural institutions. He was editor of the series "Kulturmanagement und Kulturwissenschaft" in the German University Press, co-editor of the "Deutscher Jahrbuch für Kulturmanagement" (1998 to 2005) and the "International Journal of Arts Management".

Cultural infarction

Klein is one of the four authors of the polemic Der Kulturinfarkt , published in 2012 , in which they propose the thesis that public funding for culture in Germany would produce "too much of everything and the same everywhere". In the long run, this would lead to a heart attack not only in cultural policy, but also in cultural institutions, since public demand did not grow in the same way. The book led to fierce, sometimes very polemical arguments that lasted for months.
