Arndt Schaffner (born December 11, 1946 in Münchberg ; † August 7, 2007 ) was a German photographer and documentary filmmaker as well as co-founder and long-standing managing director of the German-German Museum Mödlareuth .

Life

Schaffner has been documenting events on the inner-German border around the divided village of Mödlareuth since the late 1970s . In 1980, the documentary film On the banks of the Saale was made , three years later the diary of a divided village .

Immediately after the opening of the border in Mödlareuth on June 17, 1990, he and the Mayor of Töpen , Arnold Friedrich, began to document the separation of the village and campaigned for the partial preservation of the barriers. This resulted in the German-German Museum , which Schaffner took over as director. He was able to collect more than 20,000 contemporary documents and exhibits from the area between Plauen and Suhl . His photographic documentation of the border includes around 25,000 images.

In 1999 Schaffner was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his life's work .
