Arne Lietz (born July 23, 1976 in Güstrow ) is a German SPD politician. In the European elections in 2014 , he was in the European Parliament elected.

Life

Arne Lietz grew up with his three sisters in a Mecklenburg parish household. After doing his community service in Boston (USA) through the association “ Action Reconciliation Service for Peace ” and working at the Goethe Institute , he studied history, politics and education in Berlin and Cape Town (South Africa).

He then worked as a historian in the USA, Germany and England for an American teachers' organization and for the Federal Agency for Civic Education . Because of his interest in politics, he started working for the SPD member of the Bundestag Engelbert Wistuba in 2007 . The constituency comprised the places Dessau, Roßlau, Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Köthen. Since 2010 he has been working in the town hall of Lutherstadt Wittenberg as an advisor to the mayor Eckhard Naumann .

On Reformation Day 2008 he joined the SPD and was elected chairman of the local SPD association in Lutherstadt Wittenberg in 2011 and chairman of the district of Wittenberg in 2012. He ran for the 2013 Bundestag election in the constituency of Dessau-Wittenberg , but did not win a seat. In March 2014 he was subsequently chosen as the top candidate in Saxony-Anhalt for the European elections. With 27.3 percent of the SPD in the European elections , he was able to move into the European Parliament with number 24 on the federal list as one of the 27 social democratic MEPs from Germany. He is a full member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Development Committee . He is a substitute member of the Subcommittee on Security and Defense (SEDE). In addition to his work in the European Parliament, he has been a voluntary member of Atlantik-Brücke since 2016 .
